Academy Hyundai Grandeur

This is the Academy Hyundai Azera kit, because the grille/wheels in the kit are not Azera pieces, I built it as the Grandeur.

It's an odd kit, nice in some respects, half-baked in others. There are chrome bezels for the front headlights/fog lamps, etc, but nothing for the taillights which I sprayed Alclad Chrome onto their backsides (carefully).

The body has extremely weak engraving of panel lines, I spent upwards of 5-6 hours (spread over two sessions) rescribing the lines. There's enough there to use as a guide, but they are terribly weak.

The kit has both decals and stickers. The interior detail is decent, but not fantastic. Separate inserts for door panels, but weak seat/dash engraving.

For a basic curbside it's decent, and it's different. Looks a lot like a Buick to me.

Paint is Tamiya's new TS metallic orange, over a TS Gunship Gray base to make it darker (same color I painted my LaFerrari, but that was over orange, so it's much brighter). This is a copper-brown color, seems to suit the car.

Wheels are from a Revell 2015 Mustang, painted Alclad Steel w/a Rub 'N Buff detail afterwards. The kit brake rotors were modified to fit the Revell wheels and to drop the front ride height a bit.

Re: Academy Hyundai Grandeur

Very different kit. Wish there were more main stream cars available.

Re: Academy Hyundai Grandeur

Nice job, Bob! Was the roof supposed to be a panoramic panel and Academy skipped out on a clear part?

There are two roof panels in the kit, this one (molded in black) and a clear piece, take your pick. Neither have any inner detail (framework/headliner) so making it remotely correct is up to the builder. I was going to do the roof gloss black, haven't gotten around to it, and the appearance is okay in Mr. Surfacer black for the time being. Just part of the half-hearted nature of the kit itself

Re: Academy Hyundai Grandeur

Nice work as always! Is this a plastic kit? I thought I saw it online some time back & it was crazy expensive!
Would be great to do some VIP treatment to this kit,

Thanks, yes this is the plastic kit. $30 MSRP in the US is kind of ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as some Japanese kits that have another middleman added that doubles the price (or more) if you buy them in a retail store in the US. This kit was about double the price of the Revell Raptor I recently built, the Revell kit was definitely better in most regards aside from stickers (no decals) and boxart presentation.
