Shell starts selling super-premium gasoline

If you're already tanking up with premium gas, you might notice a different option during your next fill-up at a Shell station. The oil company is launching a new fuel formula called V-Power Nitro+ Premium, and it claims that this is most advanced gasoline currently on the market.

V-Power Nitro+ adds chemicals to the company's gas that allegedly coats parts to prevent engine wear and protect fuel system components. According to Shell, an increasing number of vehicles are now requiring premium, and this product is a way to adjust to that change.

While Shell asserts that the cleaning agents in the gas act "like a barrier to protect against gunk, wear, and corrosion," the Detroit Free Press notes that none of these claims are independently verified, yet. Theoretically, V-Power Nitro+ might help, though. "Half the friction in an engine comes from the cylinders and piston rings," Harold Schock, director of energy and automotive research labs at Michigan State University, said to the newspaper. "Reformulated fuel could make a difference."

For the last two years, premium gasoline volumes and vehicles requiring premium fuels rose, despite the decline in industry gasoline sales. Recognizing the growing need for high performance premium fuels, Shell launched Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline as a means of putting its customers' needs first.

The Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline formulation contains a combination of two key cleaning agents that perform better than the single component in the previous Shell V-Power formulation. This innovation enables inclusion of a new, breakthrough component designed to help prevent wear in critical engine parts. The new premium fuel also helps protect critical fuel system components from corrosion, destroys gunk left behind by lower quality premium gasoline; it then acts like a barrier to protect against gunk, wear and corrosion.

Development of the new, innovative formulation came through the technical partnership between Shell and Scuderia Ferrari. This technical partnership with Scuderia Ferrari is considered one of the most technically advanced and successful in the history of Formula One racing, having resulted in 12 Drivers' Titles and 10 Constructors' Championships.

The Shell V-Power race fuel used in the Scuderia Ferrari SF15-T V6 power unit contains at least 99% of the same types of compounds used in Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline.

I believe it's still 91 octane. Just some cleaning agents added which probably won't do much in today's direct injection engines. A 30 cent a gallon marketing ploy by shell. A lot of people are buying more octane than they need through bad advice and misinformation. Go by your vehicles handbook for fuel requirements.

Agreed. Too many people think higher octane either runs cleaner (it doesn't) or adds power (it doesn't) and when you try to correct them they get mad and say that their dad told them that and he would never lie, or whatever. You try to explain what octane is and does and it just goes right over their head.
