Question How to Replace Door Lock Mechanism?

Helping out someone with a 1996 Buick Regal 4-door. The LF (driver's) door needs the Lock Mechanism replaced. I removed the door panel, and snooped around a little. I have replaced Lock Mechanisms in Mopars from the 1960's - 1990, and even a couple Ford products. I've never replaced one on a GM product, and I don't see how to remove/re-connect all the rods. The access hole is far forward of the Mechanism. I'd be trying to disconnect/reconnect those rods blindly, almost impossible with my oversize paws.

Do I need to drill-out the rivets for the inside door lock (to gain better access)?

If anyone has any suggestions or a R&R procedure, I would appreciate it.

Re: How to Replace Door Lock Mechanism?

Placing a work light inside the door cavity and using a telescoping inspection mirror can help with the assembly without having to dismantle everything. It the interior latch release is still in the way the peel rivets may have to be removed, and then replaced. Using machine screws, nuts and shakeproof washers may be an option, but they can work loose, whereas the peel rivets are usually permanent.

I understand about the limited space, and you may have to improvise.
