2006 Taurus dies and etc help ....

Ok we first noticed it when we put it in reverse last summer it died for the first time we were parking it ...then it did it a few to.going 55mph on the 4 lane too so we need to fix it it doesn't happen a lot ...We also noticed that sometimes when we just stick the key in the ignition the speedometer will jump a little we thought that was odd.... anyways.... the other day we cut it off and it wouldnt start back and the key fob wouldn't work the doors etc either any ideas????

The time that the car wouldn't start back up and the fob wouldn't work either, did the starter motor spin the engine over quickly it just failed to start, or did the starter motor not spin either?

The first thing I'd do is check the condition/age of the battery. If the battery is 3 years old or older, consider changing it. The days of 5 year batteries seems to be gone.

If the battery and connections to the battery are not the issue, then you might have a problem with the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. The CKP sensor could explain the random stalling, but would not explain the key fob failing to work.

The autolock feature is triggered by vehicle speed, not time, so while that is curious, I'm not sure that would be directly related to the stalling.

Since the time that the car would not start it would not even engage the starter, this does sound more electrical in nature. Assuming that other electrical features were not dead (dash lights came on, interior lights still worked, etc.), I'd be inclined to suspect the ignition switch. Not the key cylinder switch, but the ignition switch that the key cylinder switch controls. I'll try to find some time this evening to review the factory wiring for that system to see if there might be other parts that could also make sense.

Yeah, fuel filters are maintenance items that are often overlooked. It wasn't a waste of time or money to change it, even if that was not related to the issue of no power.

Since everything was dead that time, you really need to be looking in the area of the battery. Confirm the battery connections are clean and tight and that the battery cables are of the molded style, not the "temporary" style that clamps on to the copper wire. Those have a tendency to allow the copper to corrode which can cause connections problems.

If the cables appear clean and are tight, then you should consider that you might still have a bad battery with an internal intermittent open circuit. Has the battery been replaced since last summer when these issues started?
