Re: buying Service books
It depends on what kind of car you have. With the internet nowadays most stuff can be easily found with a quick Google search. FSM's (Factory Service Manuals) can come in handy, but sometimes they can be overwhelming to a novice.
With my Stealth I have a FSM on disk and I have torn that car apart so many times that I can basically do anything blindfolded. Anything I don't know how to do all I have to do is make a phone call and get instructions from one of several people. With my Grand Prix I use Google and YouTube. I replaced the Intermediate Steering Shaft on it by finding a write up someone had done, and then I watched a video on YouTube. I replaced the steering rack and reading a quick write up. I found a video as backup, but it wasn't even needed with the write up. I replaced the heater core by finding where someone had posted pages out of a manual. All the other crap I have done by figuring it out as I go.

Re: buying Service books
Some hardware stores offers these kind of deals or coupon on their products, you need to visit your local stores for this.

Re: buying Service books
When it comes to service books, I believe it's better to stay with the ones offered by dealers itself.
