Stripping old promo kits

Whats the best way to get that shoddy clear paint off of old AMT promo kits? I tried alcohol but it just razed the surface and actually just seemed to make it harder. I've done it before, I think I used Super Clean but I don't remember.

Super Clean is an excellent choice. Take the kit apart as best you can and dip the parts in a bath of the cleaner. Just be sure not to soak your hands in it as it will dry your hands out badly. It will strip chrome so don't dip chrome parts unless you want them stripped. It can also remove parts assembled with super glue.

This frame was caked with a thick black unknown paint brushed on from a previous builder. It completely dissolved the old paint that traditional stripping methods wouldn't even touch, leaving the part like new as if it just came out of the box with minimal haze.





Also, warming it in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds greatly increases the process, both in effectiveness and speed.

It strips chrome to bare plastic in minutes (including the base coat).

There are several different products from Super Clean.
Regular, Kitchen Cleaner, Foaming Cleaner, Foaming Grill Cleaner, Foaming Cleaner Degreaser...
Anything you would especially recommend, or definitely not recommend?

I'm trying to dechrome some parts from Italeri's 250 GT California, and so far nothing has even touched the chrome layer.

It can be purchased in smaller spray-bottle form, but if you want to dip an entire body or very large parts this gallon size is the way to go. That being said you want a container big enough to for car bodies and then another container small enough for parts such as wheels and bumpers. It does not harm plastic so parts can be left in Super Clean for a very long time.

The liquid is purple colored but turns clear when exposed to the sun. Also, it might turn yellow after repeated use, but it's effectiveness as a stripper is still 100%. It doesn't go bad so it will last a long time. I've never stripped chrome off an Italeri kit before but I'll try an experiment tonight to see how it works with their chrome and get back to you.

So I placed an Italeri chrome piece into the Super Clean and it works, but it took longer than I expected. Most chrome on plastic is a combination of aluminum and clearcoat and it is the clearcoats that tend to resist the strippers. I guess the Italeri clearcoat is a little tougher than most. Leave the parts in the Super Clean for a day or two to be sure you get all the chrome and clearcoat off the parts.
