I've never done anything really mechanical but I need to take out an engine put another one in and replace the tranny, can anyone help me out with some tips on which bolts to take off or maybe some websites to look at or some numbers to call, thanks.

THIS IS THE JEEP SECTION... LAST I checked they don't make 4 cylinders on jeep cherokees, usually inline 6s.

Dude, no dought...They made a lot of those 4 popers for the Cherokees. The L6 is a definate better engine, but the 4 was nothing bad.

Couple of suggestions for you:
1. Take your time. Nothing sucks worse that rushing through a job and screwing it up because you overlooked something.

2. Buy the haynes manual. You can get it from any good parts store. This book can help you pull and install both engines

3. Use the right tools and think safety first.

4. Double check to make sure you have the right wire harness. Also make sure that the tranny will fit. I think it should but I am not 100% sure. Double check before you start.

Haibane: not all jeeps had the famous inline 4.0 6 banger. many jeep cherokee had fours. The four was not a super strong engine but it did the job and was totally capable of getting someone from point A to point B.

Let us know how your project goes.

If its a Jeep made before 87 then it has a GM motor in it.

This was before AMC(Jeep) started making their own engines. 87 and up Jeeps had either a 2.5L I4 or the 4.0L I6(High Output model '91-'93). Grand Cherokees had the option of getting a 5.2L V8.

Honestly I would not recommend an engine swap because the money you spend on the engine swap could have bought you a decent 87 or newer cherokee that had the 4.0L. Ive seen some nice Cherokees for sale for a little a $1500. Cherokees are a dime a dozen too so finding one won't be hard. Its much easier to just buy a Cherokee with the 4.0L rather than putting a 4.0L into a chassis that it wasn't originally designed for.

Good Luck
