2001 ford taurus gas tank repair
Long story short. Needed a fuel pump, check. Needed a fuel hose, check. Putting the gas tank back together broke a fitting on the fuel tank. don't know what it is, some kind of valve. No part number, don't know how to get it and don't know the name of it. More help needed.

Re: 2001 ford taurus gas tank repair
tankvalve1.gifThanks for the reply Shorod. Mine was #2 in the diagram. Fuel vapor vent valve. If anyone runs into this problem down the road, the part # is F8DZ-9B593-AB for a 2001 ford Taurus, 3.0L, 6cyl, gas. Researched it on line, Ford; $108, Ebay; $60-$100. salvage yard cost me $5 bucks. This one came out of a early model crown vic. With some penetrating oil and a couple of putty knives it popped right out, Its just seated into rubber grommet on the tank. Most of the tanks I looked at, there were a dozen of these vents. Only problem is the emission hose that attaches to the valve looked heat shrunk, very tight fit and very hard plastic. Still trying to figure that out, to take it off with out breaking off the nipple and joining it with the existing hose. Maybe a heat gun or slicing it. Applicable cars; 2006-1998 linc town car; Crown Vic; grand Marq and some Taurus's. One problem down.

Re: 2001 ford taurus gas tank repair
For those types of gas fitting hoses I boil a couple pots of water, take one pot off the flame since there are usually gas fumes coming from old fitting and into the garage, and submerge for a few minutes to get it soft again. I don't torch or heat gun an old gas fitting, but will if it is a new fitting. I'll use the second pot if the first cooled too much before the fitting hose softened up, having left it boil until needed.

Yep, the boiling water method suggested by 65Comet is a good approach.

Re: 2001 ford taurus gas tank repair
Man I could have really used that diagram when I changed out my gas tank. What a surprise when I pulled the new tank out of the box and saw all those openings in the top of the tank. Best part is i had to go to three Ford dealers before I found one who knew what components went in there and sold me the right ones ( they are made of plastic and after 10 years they snapped immediately when I tried to remove them). I don't know if I'll ever come across this job again but I'm printing that diagram and pasting into my service manual

In defense of 2 of those 3 dealers, it took me several minutes to find that diagram in the factory service manual. The fuel system and related components do not seem to be as intuitively located in the service manual as many of the other systems. Probably due to the close relationship with the EVAP system.
