2000 C2500 Old Body Style dual alternator

Can the exciter wire for my second alternator be spliced into the original alternators wire or can it be hooked up to a switch? It is going to be charging its own battery on the drivers side. It is a 2000 GMC C2500 old body style with the 5.7 vortec. Thanks.
