87 firebird fuel pump location and installing a new fuel pump

Hello I was wondering know where the fuel pump is located on a 87 TA firebird and how to get to it? A picture or a diagram would be a big help. Do you have to drop the fuel tank to access the fuel pump? The car will turn over but will not start. Could it also be the PTU unit too? Thank you for the advise.

So do I need to empty and then drop the tank to install a new fuel pump?

First check for spark at the plugs, if ok check fuel pressure at the rail, how else would you know what is wrong?

Re: 87 firebird fuel pump location and installing a new fuel pump

If there is a healthy blue spark at the plugs (checked with a spark tester) and the fuel rails have at least 34 PSIG with KOEO, check for injector pulses. Any problems with the HEI module, its wiring, and the injector harness can cause a no-start condition.

Again, follow Max's advice first and check spark. If spark is present, measure actual standing fuel pressure with a gauge, and don't simply check for the presence of fuel by depressing the Schrader valve core in the fuel rail.

If the pressure is non-existent check the 20A ECM/Fuel Pump fuse in the inline holder near the battery.

If the fuse is intact and has 12V on both ends, start looking at the FP relay:

The circuit is pretty straightforward:

Re: 87 firebird fuel pump location and installing a new fuel pump

As the guys have suggested, make sure you test for power to the fuel pump, and pressure from the fuel pump.....it could be working and the injectors are the problem.....

Is this throttle body injection? If so, is fuel coming out of the injectors? If no, spray carb cleaner into the throttle body....does the car start and run as long as you spray?

Dropping this tank is a nightmare.....you better be sure before you attempt to drop it....

I'm not an expert, but I agree with the above post. There is a whole bunch I would test before jumping to dropping the tank. Fuses, fuel filter(s), fuel pressure, spark. etc. Test the simple stuff first.
