1/20 Tamiya Lotus 102B

I started this last weekend. After the recent Sauber C31 I've stepped back in time to 1991 for the Lotus 102B, as driven by J. Herbert. The bodywork was sprayed with Gaia Notes Pure White, which gives a lovely gloss finish ready for the decals, of which there are plenty. I was going to try and paint the green, but after exhausting all possible avenues regards doing this I decided to give the decals a try (Studio 27) They actually came out pretty nicely. Once I've completed them all, I'll give it a few light coats of clear and move onto the chassis whilst the body bits are drying. There's a few tiny touch ups to do where the green decals didn't quite meet up on the engine cover, but luckily Mr Color Bright Green #66 is a perfect match to the decal green
As always please post your comments good or bad and thanks for looking. More to follow soon..

I got them many years ago when they were first released, if I remember correctly they came from Best Balsa Kits. They're long out of production now, but I'm pretty sure that Shunko Models or Tabu do a sheet..

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Lotus 102B

Very quick update. It looks like quite a simple livery on the face of it, but it's far from easy when you get to actually doing it. Believe it or not the hardest decal to apply correctly was that green band along the top of the engine cover. The rest were tricky, but with care and patience not too bad. I have most of the body decals on the cockpit tub and engine cover complete now. I just need to wait until tomorrow for the "Swithland Motors plc" decal to dry and then I will cut the split line between the tub and the engine cover on this decal and Microsol the edges down. I'll then be moving on to the rest of the wing parts front and rear and also the wheels. After that the chassis will be worked on...

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Lotus 102B

I've applied some clear coat onto the engine cover, cockpit tub, front wing and rear wing parts yesterday. Two very light coats of Zero 2K clear, 5 mins apart. It's dried quite nicely, although not the best I've achieved with the 2K clear. I'll do some light polishing to bring it up better..

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Lotus 102B

Spent some time on the seat today. The Tamiya seat has moulded belts, so I carefully ground them down somewhat with the Dremel. I then applied white pva glue onto the surface and covered it with flocking material. Once dry I sprayed the seat the same red as the steering wheel (Zero) and made up the belts and fitted them. The flock looks massively over-scale on the picture, but the camera has emphasized it quite a bit. It looks 'normal' to the naked eye..
