Instrument cluster dead 02 burbs

The cluster just died on my 2002 Suburban. I've had it out before - replaced all the stepper motors a year ago to fix the freestylin' gauges. Been working fine since then. We were driving along and the DIC lights flashed, all the gauges spiked, then the thing just completely died. If I hit the dash just right I was able to get it to come to life for a while, but now it's completely dead.
Given that, I suspect that it's a bad solder somewhere (like where the power comes onto the circuit board?) Any ideas?

ps - for a fun time, try driving 600 miles without a speedometer or gas gauge. Half of it at night. In a white-out blizzard. We were calculating our speed by timing the mile markers and doing some math.
