Question What would be the best setup?

Alright I just bought a 90 crx and I want to do an engine swap. At first I was gonna go for looks untill some asshole in his Dodge Avenger pissed me off last night while in my gf's car. I plan to save untill spring to do the swap meaning i'll have around 6-6500 bucks to play with. I just need to know what the best swap is and how much it will run me.

with that much i would go gsr (b18c) and use the extra cash to put some goodies on it, or you could build a really really mean boosted D series setup, or be like everyone else and get a b16

i would go GSR (b18c) or b20/vtec with that much cash ...

my buddy currently is working on a b20/vtec to put into his 94 GSR ... should have it done late july to early august ... hes hoping to hit low 13's ... same engine in a crx would be a lot faster cause the crx is lighter.

I dont know what internals or any of that shit he has goin ... he comes on AF once in a while though so maybe he will reply to this thread.

I think the smartest thing to do would be b18c1 (gsr) however, if you really want to turn some heads, go b18c5 (type r) Thats 205 horses and with other hardware, youll be sure to fly by anyone, they cost about 4500-5000 for engine ecu and tranny. Thats just me though,

but with the extra money you save on the crvtec, you can spend on mods, where-as he'd pretty much be stock with the type r motor.

I guess youre right, however, with 6500 bucks to play with, type r would be tight to floss. I dont know, now that I think about it, I probably would go with the gsr setup. lol, I'm so wierd like that, changing my mind all the time...lol

Hop aboard, you best choice is a 1st gen B16.
Some SOHC haters can say what they will, but 1st gen B16 is the best swap for the money if you want to go fast in your EF.

Why?
Its a LOT cheaper than a GSR, or a Type-R motor.. If you shop around you can even find them for cheaper than complete LS swaps.
You can get them with a cable LSD tranny for like $1200ish.
Easy to build up with as much or more HP than a GSR or type-R while still staying under the cost of those high demand - high priced motors.
Its non-OBD. You don't need to do all the extra wiring for an OBD motor, plus, you won't run into the headaches sometimes associated with modding a newer OBD1 or 2 motor.
Did I mention how cheap they are? Longblocks can be found for <$500.

Some people are too thick headed to see that the B16A is a lot more than just a bandwagon.. But it usally seems to only be people that don't have DOHC VTEC under the hood. I wonder why that is.

dont forget about the LS. it cost around or cheaper than a b16 and has a lot more torque and more potential. i think an ls-vtec or cr-vtec would be your best all motor setups. but if you got six grand i would definitely go turbo.

Found out some GREAT NEWS ! Im deciding to do my dads plan, ( use his friend retiring from Marines in December, cuz he gots da' hook ups !!.. to get a B18C1 ( gsr ) And when that comes in.. im gonna save for a Greddy Intercooled turbocharger kit (hopefully, im still debating.. dont turbo kits need tuning alot ? ) that will give my 170 HP engine an extra 70 HP (at the wheel) And then all the essential Bolt ons..

Jus sayin this to say that theres a badass Greddy Intercooled Turbo kit that would make other driverz cream their pants after messin w/you. With jus those u can expect High 13's. Low 13's or high 12's w/ couple bolt ons

Why do you always have to be such a retard? What do you run now? Oh ya, never mind.. You run an imignary B16 killing SOHC..

Man, a B16 with bolt ons will kill most any SOHC out there.. Even a boosted SOHC.. Just think about it. A D16A with 6psi (running the stock engine quite hard mind you) is running basically the same HP as a B16 with I/H/E.. So, how many D motors do you want to blow up? Me, I'm the type of guy thats just wants a nice 170-180hp Civic thats NICE AND RELIABLE. It just wasn't aceivable for a reasonable cost with the D16. Besides, the turbo for the D16 would cost more than I payed for my B16.

Bash on B16s, but you recommend the guy an overpriced GSR? WTF?! Around here GSRs go for around 4500 (Candian funny money) and B16As go for about 2Gs. For that extra 2500, tell me that the SiR is over priced and the GSR is a reasonable deal.
Or are you gonna be one of those guys who are gonna tell me that torque "outwieghs" HP or some retarded shit like that?

Realistcally for $6500 he could probably build a street driven reliable 12 second 4th gen, with a boosted B16.. I couldn't see it being very reliable with a 12 second SOHC, and I don't think you could do it if you blew over 1000 extra to buy a GSR motor.

Sorry, I thought this guy wanted to know what the BEST swap would be for his money. (Assuming he's not going to want to pay more than what he has to to reach desired HP #s, and he doesn't want something that's going to blow up)

yea man i want to pay 1200 for a 12 year old engine wow thats not overpriced at all!

and if you didnt know gsr's are better for boost.....lateral movement of the rods and all that good stuff, im sure you know

ok i spent 600 on my engine put it in myself im gettin a used zex kit for 250...add another 2-300 for fuel upgrades and add however much for slicks and i could break into the 12's with tuning for 1-1400$ say i went with that.....when b16 swaps around here ive been quoted from 2,800-3,200 installed, and theres other routes you can take with sohc too.....because it has one less cam does not make it inferior

i know routes can be taken with b16's also and i know what they are capable of, but for someone who likes a challenge and doesent have a great amount of money.......tuning a single cam is way better than being like everyone else IMO im not the one to hop on the bandwagon anyway i like to be different

and even if you do have money......why not build a mean ass single cam and run around spanking the dual cam swapped cars and see the looks on their faces when they find out its a single cam

Well, if this guys has $6500 to spend I'm sure he can afford to build a kick ass B series. But really though, the dough it what its really all about. Because if you had the money for a B16, then I'm sure that you probably would have bought one. There's no need in acting like you wouldn't, they're an awesome motor.

A D16Z with Zex would be pretty good, but a B16 with zex would be much faster. Do you see what I'm getting at? Why start out with not as good of a platform? (if you can afford it)

I don't give a shit about SOHCs usually because for every 20 people talking about how theirs "will be" faster than B16s and all that crap, maye 1 person has a heavily modded one in a stripped hatch that runs faster than I did with 16" wheels, and full interior with a system filling up my whole hatch.
