1996 F350 Powerstroke diesel, auto trans, 78K miles. Once in a while the engine stalls, dead, just like the key was turned off. Starts right up with no problem. Has happend during accelleration, decelleration and idling. A couple of times it just hesitated momentarily and did not completely stall. Happens with either fuel tank. Any suggestions as to the cause? Thanks.

Check out thedieselstop.com forums, they are your best place to get any kind of info on diesel trucks, and the people are really nice and can probably help you out.

Howdy carlwwest,
It's more than likely that your cps (cam positioning sensor) is going bad. It's pretty easy to change. Pick up a new sensor from Ford for about $130 or from International ($89.00), it is located above the harmonic balancer at 10 o'clock. Hope this helps, Gr8ride

Re: Powerstroke stalling
The CMP (cam sensor) is the MOST common cause for this. Most people I know carry a spare. 2 minutes to change is far better than a tow.
