2.4 ltr Diesel engine noise.

Ford Transit 2.4 ltr. diesel. A pal of mine has an alarming noise that developed in the engine while it was running. It is a sharp ticking noise that only starts after the engine oil pressure has built up. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
