1983 chevy caprice vacuum lines

I just replace some of my vacuum lines afterwards my check engine light came on. One of the lines were attached together, it came form the canisters going to the purge tvs and then to the canisters control valve. I removed it and just ran to separate lines. The Advance Auto Parts here do not have a machine to read the trouble code for a 1983 Chevy Caprice. I think it runs better but the check engine light was not on before now.

the canister vacuum and evap [fuel] vapor hoses should go to the control valve then the purge would go to the carb vac port. I do have a vac line diagram around here somewhere. what can happen is the fuel may get sucked into the engine threw this canister vac control valve when the internal rubber breaks then instead of canister vapor being purged the liquid fuel gets sucked into the intake all the time.

another issue with these is the use of carb cleaner. do not use any carb cleaner near the choke vac controlled pull offs as this will cause these to leak vacuum. any vacuum leaks will cause these to run very poorly and also effect cold start up..

code retrieval is by using a jumper wire between D and E on the diagnostics plug.

then you put the ignition to on engine OFF. what will happen is the check engine light will flash. the first code will be NO TACH this is because the engine is OFF. the light will flash once and the pause for a 2 sec then 2 quick flashes so that is 12 code. watch the flashes and write down what codes are stored. post what you got. if confused turn key off then back on to repeat until you got it all down properly............

Re: 1983 chevy caprice vacuum lines

Im going to check it again because I just read this from Chevrolet forum: Note: code 12 is usually the first code you get and just ignore it.Watch the code after code 12, that's what you need.

you have your glasses on ??? the connector is usually upside down so makw sure what your jumping out. the connector is marked. D E are what to short/jump together not A and B

like I said 12 code is a tach fault this is because the engine is OFF.

There should be a sticker underhood showing the vacuum hose routing. Also, It is really a good idea to get a shop manual - they are cheap and very handy on these now antiques!

Disconnect the battery and see what codes reappear. This is an early OBD 1 car with 2 digit codes.
