7500 miles and No More Engine
I was driving my new baby on a 400 mile road trip this weekend, when the oil gauge went nuts (high, low, high, low). I pulled off the road and shut the car down for a bit (too let things cool off). I am not overly mechanically inclined, but I did check the oil while it was stopped.
The engine was incredibly hot. I let it cool down for like 20 minutes and tried to restart it, nothing. Now the repairing dealership is saying that I must have had no oil in the car whatsoever and that they aren't going to cover it. When I asked how much oil the car had when it came in, they told me it was full--but that I probably added that later. A different mechanic (not from the dealership) says it sounds like the car might have had an occlusion in the oil system. The dealership just said, "we don't think so." The car had JUST been serviced (300 miles earlier) and I didn't add or change anything after the engine quit. My question is a) has anyone had a similar problem with an 01 or 02 firebird and b) does anyone have any advice on dealing with Pontiac issues (like, maybe a name of a friendly contact over there). I really want to get my beloved car back on the road, so I appreciate any help you can give me! Thanks. |

Had the oil been changed? If so, show them a receipt. If they changed it, they have no leg to stand on, since it shouldn't use oil quickly, either.

Hello, Is Anybody Home In Your Brain?
did you change the oil? who changed the oil? was it grease monkey or jiffy lube? if so they will pay. if you yourself changed the oil you are screwed. i mean come on, do you honestly think that GM is going to make a motor that leaks oil in 300 miles and then locks up? do you think that there is all these people with the same problem out there in the USA? sheesh... www.loser.com

If you have the LS1 (V8) then you may want to look into the oil pump. They are notorious for going out. It's the ONE flaw in the entire engine. LS6 oil pump is usually swapped in.
If you've got the 3.8 V6, then I dunno. Those are normally in destructable engines.

yup, i agree with blackbird, if it didnt run out of oil, and it locked up, then its got to be a problem with the oil pump, either it went out on you, or something got inthere to jam it up... I hate to hear about all that man... but let us know how it turns out...
