1992 Mustang LX 4cyl. Needs new transmission. What's it worth?

1992 Mustang LX
4 cylinder
Hatchback
63k miles

(My car knowledge does not go past changing a tire)

The transmission is about done and the car wont go in reverse anymore. The mechanic told me it would cost upwards of 1500 to replace the transmission. The other problems are:
No air conditioning. (Heater works)
Driver side window doesn't work.
Driver side outside handle is broken.
Driver side arm rest fell off.

I like my car and if I wasn't a poor student then I would just pay to fix it. I can't afford to fix it so I know I had better sell it before it rots in my driveway. I know you can get $500 for any old clunker but people tell me that the car is cool and made of steel? What should I try to get for it? I am not in a rush.

I bought a 1992 mustang 2.3 running with nothing wrong for $500 so if your car is not running it is not worth vary much1

Pretty much what he said. Unless you can find a tranny from a junk yard for cheap, I don't think its wise to spend $1,500 on an $500 car.

63k miles on it and the transmission is no good... kind of says it all doesn't it?
In the future I would recommend avoiding old 4cyl mustangs. They're problematic in many ways, that's just a simple fact. The only one I can think of that was worse than the lx model was the mustang II.
As for your mustang, consider it totalled. A mustang lx with a bad transmission is worthless.
