Who makes the Ford Ranger engine?

A friend of mine is trying to convince me that the Ford Ranger pickup engines are all made by Ford and always have been. And I told him that just because the truck says Ford on the side does not mean that Ford made the engines.

I have an old 1990 Dodge spirit and the 4 cylinder engine in it was made by Mitsubishi. A darn fine engine by the way. My mechanic told me that the engine in my old Dodge will outlast the rest of the car; and he was right. The car is literally falling apart around the engine but the engine is like the Every Ready bunny.

Anybody out there know who makes the Ranger engines?

Thanks!

Re: Who makes the Ford Ranger engine?

You can get the whole history on Ford engines and their origins from Wikipedia. It would be a long post to do it here, but I do think Ford makes most of them. For instance Ford in Germany designed the 2.8L V6 originally and then modified that into the 2.9L V6. There has bee so much sharing of components among automotive manufacturers that I wouldn't make any bets on anything.

Re: Who makes the Ford Ranger engine?

The 1990 Dodge Spirit 4 cylinder was a Chrysler engine. The V6 was a Mitsubishi engine.

All Ford Rangers had Ford engines. The 4.0L V6 was called the "Cologne V6" that began life in Ford Europe. The 2.3L Duratec 4 cylinder used in the early/mid 2000's was designed with Mazda, but was a Ford engine.

Re: Who makes the Ford Ranger engine?

So, my 2002 Ranger XLT with a 3.0L Flex-Fuel engine is a Duratech?

Re: Who makes the Ford Ranger engine?

No. It is a 3.0 Liter Vulcan 12 valve motor. The Duratec 3.0 L V6 was a 24 valve Dual Overhead Cam engine. They are referring to the 2.3 L as a Duratec.
