Inner Tie Rod end

I have a 2000 GLS Alero with 240K on it. The drivers side inner tie rod end. (I think u-joint protected by a boot that connects to the rack) is loose and make popping noises while driving.

Is it possible to just replace this joint and boot or does the entire rack have to be replaced? I notice this joint comes on the rack if you purchase a replacement so have me concerned.

Yes, it's possible to replace the inner tie rod, although it requires a special tool. Parts store may have the tool to rent or purchase. If the gear is leaking, you may look into replacement of the whole thing, but I think the rack and pinion for those are pretty pricy. Don't forget the alignment after the repairs are completed.

That sounds good. Can you point me to a change out procedure and perhaps the part number of the inner tie rod joint? I can't seem to find that part at autozone.

AZ part# ES4054 40.00. Not too difficult, remove outer tie rod, lock nut, clamps on boot, boot, push back plastic sleeve on inner tie rod nut, install tool and 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar and remove. Apply red lock tite to new threads and reinstall, stake new tie rod in place.

I looked at it closer last night. I think it might not be the inner tie rod but the driver side mount for the rack if that makes sense. After pulling the tire if I turn the steering wheel all the way to the left I see the rack physically move up and down.

Is this a common problem? Also can someone send a pic/diagram of where the mount for the rack on the drivers side is located?

I would'nt call it "common", but I have seen it before, the bracket breaks at the gear. The steering gear (rack and pinion) will need to be replaced if this is the case. A picture would be great is you could.
