2001 S-10 4x4 Speedometer and Odometer dead

After changing the fuel tank pressure sensor, speedometer stays at 0, and odometer/trip are lit up, but don't change. Hooked up my Mentor Pro, and swapped VSS from working truck, datastream shows correct speed as I'm driving, LF, RF and Rear Wheel speeds all agree, and are accurate to my GPS. Any one ever seen this? I would have guessed stepper motor, but odometer not changing is throwing me off.

Tried clearing codes, and also unhooked battery for good measure. No change. I also changed cap and rotor when I replaced the FTP sensor.

Re: 2001 S-10 4x4 Speedometer and Odometer dead

more info....

I also changed the left front wheel bearing at the same time as the ftp. Currently there are no ABS codes, and the MIL is not on. I did try unplugging the ABS connector in the new wheel bearing assembly, but no change.

And the cruise control does not work now.

Verified ignition power to brown wire at Cruise Control module, and good ground at blk/wht. From the wiring diagrams I've found, it looks like the VSS signal goes from the VSS to the PCM

to the cruise control module. I know it's getting to the PCM since my scanner is reading a mph signal.

Re: 2001 S-10 4x4 Speedometer and Odometer dead

Found a pretty good wiring diagram. VSS output goes from Pin 50 of PCM through wiring harness on firewall, ends up splitting into 3 wires, one goes to Pin K of Cruise Control Module, one goes to A4 of the gauge cluster and the third goes to the Speed Control Volume on the stereo (can't remember which pin). I ohm'd the wiring from the Cruise control module to both the gauge cluster and stereo, and had good connection, so I know all these wires are connected. I also ohm'd the Pin 50 to Cruise Control module, and it's open. However, I did not think to reverse the polarity of my leads. And I'm a novice schematics reader. I had to go to work, so I won't be able to switch the leads until late tonight. Does anyone have a wiring diagram (and a smarter brain than me) that can tell me if there is a Diode or something that would keep my ohmmeter from reading one direction? I'm guessing if there is not a Diode, the wire from the PCM to the split is broken. If there is a Diode, I'll check it, but I'm hoping the PCM is bad, and it's not sending signal out of Pin 50. Sorry for rambling on, but maybe someday this'll help someone else too.

Re: 2001 S-10 4x4 Speedometer and Odometer dead

Solved. A mouse had chewed the VSS output wire from the PCM about 3 inches before it went into the SP200 Splice Pack (little black box, which is located under the carpet right in front of where the passenger's feet go). That splice pack is where the single wire from Pin 50 of the PCM turns into the 3 wire (or more depending in your S series and it's options), it is also where my mouse decided to stop and have a snack. After spending a few hours tracing wires and disassembling different stuff, I finally located the SP200, and found the bad wire. So, in case any of you ever need to hook some sort of aftermarket device to the VSS output, that's a great spot.
