Exclamation 99 5.7 white smoke :(

99 1500 2wd 5.7 burb

out of the blue I started old red up yesterday(after charging the dead battery) and got a huge cloud of white smoke. Smells of coolant so Im thinking oh great a head gasket. The thing is, I can see no trace of coolant in oil or vice versa. I started it up with radiator cap off, while cranking I got a little fluid spit out the neck but once it started it was not gushing or bubbling at all.

I guess my question is what next? I thought it could be an intake gasket too but im not sure the coolant even goes through the intake or not. Dont really want to take to a shop, im 30 years old and have never used a shop for any repair. I can fix but not the best diagnotic guy.

ps the only codes are for one of the 02 sensors bad, and 2 of the 02 heater element. I have bought one of the three so far but that cant be related right?

Re: 99 5.7 white smoke :(

Drain down some coolant to just above the radiator core to allow for expansion when t/stat opens. Run engine to temp with rad cap off and see if you have continuous bubbles in the radiator. Then shut truck off hot. Disable ignition and fuel.(pull ecm and tbi fuses).Remove all spark plugs and let sit overnight. Next day, watch to see what flies out of the spark plug holes when you have someone crank the engine over for 10 seconds. If there's coolant spraying out certain cylinders then that's where the head gasket is leaking. This is the simple method indicator. There's other testing to be done before you just rip off a cylinder head.
