Re: 1988 park avenue 3.8 ECM location

Have to send my brain into the wayback machine, I think it is under the dash on the passenger side.....

Everything in the car should be off, key out of ignition, and battery disconnected(just disconnect the negative cable).....remove the ECM from the bracket(usually secured with 10mm or 13mm nuts).....remove the two or three harnesses from the ECM....

Be very careful of ESD's......electro static discharge......this can build up just by sliding across the seat....constantly ground your self, by touching something metal on the car.....do not take the new ECM out of the box, until you are ready to transfer the PROM.....

Transfer the old PROM from the old ECM to the new ECM(it is located under the cover with two screws in it)....slowly pry the PROM up gently on the ends, until it comes free.......then gently install in the new ECM.....it only goes in one way, so make sure you are lined up correctly....gently push down so fully seated....install cover...transfer any retainters from the old to the new ECM.....keep grounding yourself by touching metal......attach harnesses and install in bracket....attach battery cables....then put key in ignition, see if you have a check engine light in dash....then start the car....

Good Luck....

How did you determine the ECM was the problem?

Re: 1988 park avenue 3.8 ECM location

Thank you so much for this needed advise. After checking/changing everything else, the car still had poor performance, I decided it needed a brain. This has been a nightmare for my own brain. Again thank you for your help.
