Re: 1997 Chevy Malibu stub shaft.

No, the stub shaft comes directly out of the transmission and goes directly into the CV Joint shaft. The car is front wheel drive.

Re: 1997 Chevy Malibu stub shaft.

Is the axle assy out of the car and you're trying to separate them? There's a circlip on the end of the shaft holding it in. If its out of the car prop it up in a bench vise and put a vicegrip on the shaft using a hammer to drive the vicegrip away and out. On the other hand if its separated from the half shaft and still stuck in the trans/diff a combination of prybars, vicegrips and contorsions worked for me. But Kent-Moore has a tool I don't quite remember the number,( J-41228 ?),puller and a slide hammer. Make sure you replace the circlips and case seal.

Re: 1997 Chevy Malibu stub shaft.

I made a tool that clamps on to the stub shaft, I attatch slide hammer. Have rotated 2 or 3 degrees and slide tapped it a couple of rotations, but it dosn't seem to move. I have slide hammered it few times and it does not move. Worried I will break something!

You use 2 pry bars and pry/rock the shaft side to side as you pry it outwards.

Re: 1997 Chevy Malibu stub shaft.

I think this happens on a 4T40/45E tranny...need a special tool to separate it....also before putting the stub back in, now would be the time to replace that axle seal....

If a 4 speed auto, with no dipstick, it's a 4T40E or 4T45E.....

Re: 1997 Chevy Malibu stub shaft.

Forgot to mention......you not only replace the seal in the tranny, you replace the contact surface on the stub shaft also....

You know the procedure for checking fluid level?

Re: 1997 Chevy Malibu stub shaft.

Thanks to everyone for the help!! Got it out with slide hammer and crowbar. Rotate & pop it. Rotate & pop. The C-clip broke, so far I was able to get about a third of it with a magnet, the other piece must have fallen where the axles ride. Is this ok or do I have to get the rest of it out?
