Brake fluid replace

1997 Riviera - 3.8 Liter, L36 - 141,715 miles


Two or three shops have suggested a Brake Fluid Change. I've put it off, it's never been done. This being the start of the 17th year in the 97 Riv, it shouldn't be neglected any longer.

Any tips on brake fluid exchange? Is a retail shop ok? (like Goodyear), or a dealer with their GM'ist equipment? Are the BG products and services ok? not sure about their chemicals. What's the best advise?

Save yourself some money. Look at owners manual for recommended fluid. Turkey baster, pull out what your can, refill. Drive it. Week or two later, repeat.

Ended up going to an upscale tire & auto center a few miles away today and having the brake system flushed after seeing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqXua44RHOU (not necessarily an endorsement).. mainly because the objective was to force (or suck) all, or nearly all old fluid out. The other thing was handling and disposing of the fluid.

The tech that did the work was an old-timer grey headed guy, and that was good. He says it wasn't that bad compared to some he's seen. I've never the changed brake fluid in 16 years.. probably original. Good to go now!

Fairly simple.....suck out the reservoir....refill......and using a hand held vac pump with the reservoir attachment on it, suck out the lines, rr, lr, rf, lf(keeping fluid level in the reservoir full)....use Dot 3......
