Output shaft.

Anybody have instructions on pulling the input and output shafts on the 2004 GTP?
I want to check them for wear and maybe put a repair sleeve on it. There is more movement than there should be. I never had to pull one before. Thanks

Re: Output shaft.

Do you mean front axles shafts?

Re: Output shaft.

No, the input and output shafts. The part that the cv axles goes on and in.

Re: Output shaft.

Wow, the axles fit into the final drive on the trans side and go thru the steering knuckle on the outer side, still lost with your terminology. maybe this will help?http://www.autozone.com/autozone/rep...96b43f80cb3cde

WOW, The passenger side axle goes into the HD differential, and the drivers side slides onto the OUTPUT shaft of the transmission. The CV axle is what goes into the spindle. The cv axles have to connect to something at the trans, which are technically called the input and output. My terminology is correct. WOW

Re: Output shaft.

But how much play?

I remember we had a new Grand Prix(first 4T65E) come in with a noise from the driver's side....tech felt some play when grabbing the CV joint near the tranny.....removed axle......shaft in tranny had some play, so a new tranny was ordered......

I was to install the new tranny...asked why this was being replaced...because of the movement of the shaft......we had another new Grand Prix that was on a lift being PDI'd.....checked for movement.....had the same amount......

Told SM, let's try a new axle before pulling the tranny......the axle took care of the noise......so there is play in those shafts......not sure why you want to replace them......is there a noise? Driveability problem?

Re: Output shaft.

I have replaced the cv axles and the noise is the same. My entire front suspension is newer. I know there is a way to remove the output shaft but have never done it on the grand prix. It is supposed to take about an hour. I just wondered if anyone had exact directions, I can figure it out though. The shaft gets grooved from the bearing and causes a little excess movement. Like you stated there is always movement new or old. There are repair sleeves that press onto the shaft to help correct that play. I just want to pull it and see how bad if any the scores are.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Output shaft.

I'm not so sure I'd want to tackle that job - at least not at home. I looked at my 4T65E manual and it shows taking off both axles, then the case extension housing, then positioning the differential carrier to get the 'special tool' in to pop the output shaft through the side gear, then removal of the diff carrier, remove snap ring and output shaft comes out on the left side.

What kind of noise is this thing making? Could it be a wheel bearing?
