Bent/broke a push rod

While re-installation of the intake manifold gasket I inadvertently swapped an exhaust PR for a intake. It's bent and broke.

Did I also bend/damage the valve? Am I looking at pulling the heads now? what are my options now?

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

Really sorry to hear. You should run a compression test. Compare that cylinder with a couple of others. You should also check the valve springs on that cylinder. Unlikely broken, but you need to check them.

If your cylinder pressure is way down, it is likely that you bent a valve. Best of luck on fixing your problem.

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

Thank you for your reply. I talked to a guy at work here said the same thing got my fingers crossed that I only bent the push rod.

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

Always remember this, if you put push rods in wrong(3.1/3.4), you will have a "long exhausting" day.......in other words the exhaust rods are longer......

Hopefully, you just bent the push rod......replace it and do a compression test, or do a leak down test.....if compression is low, you have a bent valve and have to hope there was no damage to the piston......

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

Can't get a hold of the broken rod with a magnet. It must be mushroomed and hanging up. Looks like I'll have to pull the intake.
Live and learn.

We've all been there at one time or another. Always a learning experience.

Hope you do not have to pull the head off. Or the piston out...best of luck

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

I'm taking an easy out and welding it to a rod. Hopefully I can get a grip on it and remove it. Got my fingers crossed.

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

Managed to remove the push rod but bent the intake valve.

I'll pull the head's and get the valves redone and resurface the head. $150 for the pair.
Hopefully the exhaust manifold comes off without any problems.
Yea right. Lol
I'm soaking all the bolts with PB blaster and crossing my fingers.

Should I replace the head bolts?

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

Try and find out if they are TTY bolts, torque to yield, if so one time use only.

Thanks.
Yep, I'll do a search. But not from my cell. Tiny text and buttons make it a PITA.

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

I am hoping for you that you did not damage the piston. Everyone gets their share with older cars. I am having trans slipping problems with my grand prix. Hopefully a filter and fluid change will work...yeah right

I've had a good experience with using seafoams trans tune in 2 different vehicles. Ran it then changed the trans fluid and filter. Good luck.

Yes, the head bolts will need to be replaced as they are TTY. Thanks.

Re: Bent/broke a push rod

Got both heads removed without breaking a single bolt. Not even an exhaust bolt. Although one exhaust was already broken, held in by a hair.
 not sure if it was the PB blaster that helped.
I'll post pics later.
