First 305 rebuild questions

I'm rebuilding my first motor it came out of a 86 camaro, its a 305 2bolt main. i know "i'm wasting my money do a 350" lol nope wanna be different. but i have it all stripped down and was going to take it to the machine shop to clean it up. is there anything that i should have done to it while its there honing, balancing anything like that, i am not looking for a 10 second motor, just something to tinker with that i can drop in my s-10. and any advice on parts would be greatly appreciated.

Re: First 305 rebuild questions

if they are going to hot tank or dip it will need to have them replace the cam bearings. you can check top of the block for ridge at to of each cyl. if t has enough to catch a fingernail on will want to have it bored or have them remove the ridge. they can also hone it but you will need to know the type of rings your getting so they can use right stones

Re: First 305 rebuild questions

Long time ago, I had a '79 Malibu with a 4V 305 and a 4 speed manual. This was the first year for the Quadrajet carb and the "bigger" valve heads for this engine.
First thing I did to it was put a set of Hooker headers on it and 2 1/4" inch duals.
No more cat. converter.
Disabled the EGR too, which really helped the throttle response.
When the Q-Jet wore out, I replaced it with a 600 CFM vacuum secondary Holley on a Holley replica (so they said) Z28 high rise dual plane intake.
Tried a single plane intake, but that was too much.
The camshaft was very mild--and I left it alone.
Diddling around with the distributor advance (HEI) made no difference, and I don't think it cared about jetting.
It ran very well. I got 22 MPG highway and passed the sniffer smog inspection no problem.
Apparently the 305 is a clean motor.
0-60, stock, was about 10 seconds.
When I was done, it was about 7.5 seconds and the throttle response was way better.

If you're using an impact gun to remove the bolts make sure your air hose is 3/8" and not 1/4". makes a big difference on air volume, delivery to run the gun at proper speed and torque.

Re: First 305 rebuild questions

if not you can take the crank out of the block and let them or a shop rattle the bolts out with a better impact gun. or leave it in the block and let machine shop rattle it off
