2001 trans fluid and filter change

According to the Haynes book it says, that for a 300m you will need 4.5 quarts of atf+4 fluid. So I put in 4.5 qts. of fluid and it came up short on the stick when I checked it. I had to add an extra quart to bring it up to hot marker on the stick. Can someone tell me what is right or did I do something wrong.

Thanks in advance!

Re: 2001 trans fluid and filter change

You were either a quart low before you did the fluid (and hopefully filter) change, or 5 1/2 quarts of fluid came out when you drained it. You can measure the old fluid to see how much came out if you want to know by filling the used quart bottles with it. I think the amount they say you need for a fluid change is approximate. It depends on how much of the fluid drained back from the torque converter.

Thanks jerryg2112, I also changed the filter, I didn't know about the fluid draining back from the torque converter. Thanks again for your input.
