Question 97 Civic stalling.

This is a little weird. My '97 Honda Civic LX (manual tranny) has been stalling on me whenever I come to a stop. If I'm not moving and start the car, it idles fine. It only happens when I come to a stop. Also I've been getting some hesitation between gears if I don't shift w/ revving high. Is this related? I assuming it is. Any suggestions you have would really be appreciated.

Have you been keeping up with maintenance and tune-ups? I am guessing bad plugs and wires, clogged fuel and air filters, and stuff like that.

I just replaced the wires and air filter. Plugs are going in tomorrow. ( I didn't change them w. the wires 3 days ago because a friend was borrowing my tools). I'll see if that makes a difference. Anyone else have any ideas?

Hey.

Don't forget to change the fuel filter. Run a can of Techron through the gas tank to.

Also check the vacuum line to the MAP sensor. Actually, check and/or replace all vacuum lines including the one going to the brake booster.

Good luck.

I'll do that too. But the one thing that bothers me is that when it stalls it's not stuttering or anything. Its really smooth, as if I turned the ignition off. I have no problems starting it either. Someone here in my office mentioned the o2 sensor. Do you think that would have anything to do with it ? Also, my check engine light is not coming on.

If it is the O2 sensor, usually the CEL lights up and the car will have some driveability issues. So I wouldn't worry about that at this point.

The reason I pointed out the vacuum lines is because this seems to happen when you slow down = braking. You won't notice anything at higher speeds because the engine revolutions will keep it from dying when you apply the brakes at speed. So it might be that a line somewhere is not holding vacuum when you brake and causes the MAP sensor to read a wrong intake manifold pressure and the engine dies.

I know, little things like this are a PITA to figure out.

Let us know.

Hey robmcd16,

Does your EMC come on at all?

The reason I ask is that my (94) Civic did the same thing. I'd come to a crossing or in traffic and the engine would just go off, no splutter just real smooth like you said.

Well, yesterday I finally got the problem fixed and it was the distributor which is quite costly.

Best thing is to take the car to the dealer and get a diagnostic, last thing you want is the car cutting out going across some busy road!

Cheers

DC

Actually its been running fine for a week. Then on my way to work this morning the stalling started happening again. This time my CEL is on. Aside from this the car is running great. I'm gonna have it checked out later today.

I know how you feel man! I thought I had my car fixed this weekend, but it's still running rich! It's crazy. Plan is to keep at it. Hopefully it will be fixed sometime this decade....

Good to get it checked.

It does sound very similar to how my car was. At speed it was great, it was just when it went really slow this would happen.

Good luck with it.

After it stalls and I come to a complete stop and re-start it, it idles fine. Thats the part that gets me. It starts right up too.
