Wheels and Fitting

I've been told that there are two types of wheels, ones with lug nuts that have a taper on the end, and they hold the weight of the vehicle, and ones with mag wheel nuts with washers, that only hold the wheel onto the vehicle, and the vehicle's weight rests on the hub.

Is that correct?

Now, if I can't get a wheel with a hub diametre the same as the hub, only bigger, can I buy an adapter to fill the gap? or get one made? Do I even need an adapter?

Is it possible to convert from a washer type setup to a tapered nut, so the weight will rest on the lug nuts instead?

The lugs or bolts provide the clamping force that keeps the wheels on the hub.

I believe what you may be referring to when you talk about 2 different types of wheel are hubcentric vs lug centric wheels.

Lug centric wheels are center the wheel on the hub by the wheel studs. The wheels studs must be correctly placed on the hub when the hub is made.

Hubcentric wheels are centered by the center bore of the wheel centering on the vehicle hub.

The adapter that you are referring to is called a centering ring. It fits in the center bore of the wheel to center the wheel on the hub.
