2000 Camry CE - do I REALLY have keyless entry?!

Called Toyota corporate customer service, they said the car was delivered with factory keyless entry, yet with no trunk release.

Ordered some remotes, got them in, found the instructions, yet the car won't cycle locks, indicating it's in programming mode. Tried about 10 times, can never get it to go in to programming mode.

Search says the receiver should be behind the mirror/dash-brightness knob panel. Pull the little panel, and behind the panel, in front of the fuse box, I see a connector, that has a little orange cap on it, wrapped with electrical tape.

I'm starting to think I really don't have a keyless remote receiver.

Any tips to definitively identify if there's a keyless remote receiver in the car, or not? Is that the correct location, and plug?

Thanks!

The only way to know for sure is to contact dealer with VIN in hand. If you got as far as to locate the receiver plug, it's easy install for you, just connect, put her into learning mode, mate keys, and enjoy.

I've dug in to the center lower dash, and it appears it was a CE that has the non-KRE dash wiring harness. I found a full RS3000 kits, yet have decided to work towards the RS3200 (for the lock/unlock and aux), the new Camry '00-'01 harness arrives today.

Oh my. Lots of taring car apart and putting back together see do I in your future.
All the best! Make sure you have PDL actuators too. Will be funny to go through all this to find there is no actuators.
They normally use single harness for all cars. It's more cost efficient to make one harness and simply plug unused connectors, than to make 6-12 different harnesses. I bet you DO have plug for it, but no receiver INSTALLED.

I've dug a bit in to the car, and reviewed the parts, and they did make a dash harness without KRE. I just took apart a '97 LE with no KRE and no harness connection and the RS3000, so they're out there. As this is a CE, seems reasonable. I'll probably keep my eye out for a '00-'01 with RS3200, and just pull it all out. As I suspect all of the functionality required for lock/unlock and flash is in the 4 bridge-harneses, and I don't care about the alarm functionality, it really is all really plug-and-play.
