Hi,
I just bought a 1999 Tahoe with 60k, everything is good to go except pronounced brake squeak. My question; is there a break lining light that will notify that the brakes need attention, or do I just take a look. Any advice on a brand of pad that works well? I know that this noise is "kind" of normal, only mine is really load. I have yet to take it apart, but was going to do so to apply some brake quiet stuff. Thanks in advance. |

Brake squeal is a normal condition! The brake pads have metallic content to them, that and the metal rotor makes your squeal. GM uses an wear indictor on the brake pads that make a squeal noise when they are worn down to about 20% brake pad left. This noise will be there all the time until you step on the brakes it will go away till you let off the brakes.

NO NO NO!
TAKE IT TO THE DEALER! GM and Chevy had a recall because the brake pads were sticking because of faulty lines or something like that. They will be more than willing to do the work for free

MY 99 Yukon's brakes squeak also. My mechanic took them apart and said they were fine and this was normal. They took out the asbestos and now there is nothing to help absorb some of the noise, it is all metal.

Brake Squeak
I've a 99 Tahoe. Replaced the front pads approx 20k ago with Bendix from AutoZone...good service with no squeaks to date. The leading and trailing edge of each pad is chamfered to eliminate sharp pad edges which sometimes squeak.
You may have some luck using a file to lightly chamfer the edges of your existing pads. However, if you do this, take into consideration the risk of breathing asbestos dust. Good luck |
