Painting air filter

I got an air filter to paint for my chopper build. It's the cone shape style and I'm thinking something like the K&N filters as a paper filter would be inapropriate due to it's position on the bike. Any suggestion on a paint/paintmix to use?

I find that flocking (in what ever color of your choice) can be a great option for an air filter. It does not look like a pleated paper filter. But it does look very much like a foam filter, or a foam sleeve cover over a paper filter. Which works fine for a performance/custom kind of look.

Trying to paint a pleated paper filter is an obnoxious task. There are dozens of flavors of wrong, but nothing that ever really looks right.

Did you consider using real filter material ?
I used vaccum cleaner filter sheet.
Browse my Porsche GT3 or California build thread and you'll see what I mean.
I can send you a sample if you want I still have some and regarding my build rythm I could last centuries with it...

No I didn't. And the reason why is that I seem to lack some of the fantastic imagination some of you guys got :-) I thought, "Hey, cool filter. Looks a bit rough from the mold but it must be better than something I can achieve on my own" ;-)

Looked at the California and it would surely look great on the filter. Also took a dive into the cleaning closet without any luck. Is it from a HEPA filter or what? Could you part with a fraction I would be much happy to try it out!

Years ago I started a new commercial carreer by selling some US brand Rexair "Rainbow" vaccum cleaner for french importator her in eastern France.
When I left the firm I realized I had kept in my wallet a few filter samples used to show the system working.
A few days after while looking at the big filters above Metro 6R4 engine I had the feeling those filter sheets would be a perfect match !
Also wanting to try some flocking/carpeting work in some of my models I decided to try it, and it works very well.

My last use a few weeks ago was on the bottom of the Porsche GT2 dashboard I want to put in my RWB model.

You could always fab up your own open element filter, which when installed appears way more convincing than trying to replicate K&N pleating on plastic. Here are some bits I used to make an open element on a GT500 (on the right in the first pic). Just some basic styrene and aluminum tubing to make the filter body then painted and covered with hobby mesh.



Inner venturi funnel and some punched aluminum sheet
