Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

New project - old subject... The gorgeous 1972 Ferrari 312PB, droved by Ronnie Peterson and Tim Schenken in Nurburgring 1000km. The #3 car take pole and won this lengendary race.

A video for inspiration. Great sound, isn't it?
http://www.streetfire.net/video/victory-by-design-ferrari-312-pb_179850.htm

The kit came from Model Factory Hiro, and this is my first multimaterial full detail build.
Here the kit contents :

I already started it, so some updates will be posted soon. But before that, I try to organize the kit's metal parts...

Best regards
George

A lot of fun opening up an MFH box and sorting through the bits; am working on one of my own right now. Will be interested to see what you make of it,

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

Thank you for your support. I also love the subject, so I try to do my best.
Some preparation work to the engine and gearbox for this update. No tumbler machine, so I soiled my hands.

Also, I drill many holes...

And make some test fitting.

Nothing really interesting here but I hope the next is much better.

George

Nice start. I don't have a polisher either but have found #0000 steel wool and a little time is all that's needed to make highly polished parts without losing any of the detail. Most auto parts stores carry steel wool and a large bag of the stuff is less than $5.

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

what is the tumbler/polisher you guys are referring to?

I would love a MFH kit, but I don't think my skills would do it justice.

Thank you for the information. I give a try to these steel wool pads.

Magnetic tumbler is a machine which uses tiny stainless steel magnetic pins and polishing soap to polish metal parts. In fact it produced for jewellery polishing but in can used in modelling.
Here some discussion in F1m :
http://www.f1m.com/forums/viewtopic....=20710#p211103
http://www.f1m.com/forums/viewtopic....&hilit=tumbler

But still you need to clean the molding lines or marks in these pieces. So, nothing really necessary for me. Good but not necessary to build a multimaterial kit.

Also for MFH kit, are really very good but needs a lot of work, also they have some serious mistakes, the casting in metal parts are poor. So make your trainning in plastic kits, try some resin (studio27 or fisher & pattern) ones and then make your move to a Hiro kit.

Thank you again.

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

Some progress with my little PB. All started with engine and gearbox painting.

Some rivets in engine covers :

More rivets

I try to make the engine more interesting, so I apply some weathering technics. I made wash with black and oil stain. Then I airbrushing a mix of clear orange and smoke. Finally I made a little dry-brushing with metallic colors.

The spark plug wires follows...

So the engine, with some temporally added parts, looks like this, for now :

The fuel lines will follow...

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

I started my first hiro kit couple days ago, mp4/4 conversion.word of warning, if your car uses the same kinda set up like this and you use screws to hold the wheel to the suspension drill all the parts good cos if you dont you might do what I did and use too much force and end up screwing the end off the suspension.

I am gutted as I twisted the end off a suspension arm tightening a screw.all I can say is I like the kit but you have to literaly be a few steps ahead in some cases.i had to strip half the engine down after building it and fitted the (I dont know the term) air thing ontop I found it wasnt lining up with its locating pins.

theres quite a lot of drilling required so I know what you will be going through.

but I found the best way for me with the suspension was to drill the hole quite big just so the screw bit very lightly or just managed to slip through the arm part and same with the wheel mount and use superglue to basicly glue it together.

thanks for the good logs you make.

I have had to email mfh to try to get the part I need, I used the one thats on the instructions.

Hope it will help you avoid the stupid mistake I made.

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

Thank you mates.
Bradfordian I pay attention on this. Big thanks!

An engine update... Started with fuel lines :

Some additions in places that hiro kit forget to add details.

Some more additions...

The engine is in that point for now. I plan to add the details on the right side of engine, after I glue the gearbox.

Hope you like it and thank you for your time.

Best regards
George

Re: Ferrari 312PB 1972 Nurburgring - MFH 1/24

Some exhaust preparation and painting for today...

I add some weld lines...

The painting progress started with black base (for 3D effect) and the weathering done with burnt iron and smoke. A matt clear coat sealed them.

Hope you like it and take some comments this time

Best regards
George
