Re: need a hand

What do you mean by the voltage of the relay?

Re: need a hand

Voltage to the relay should be BAT voltage.......trying to remember where the relay was on a 24 year old car.....naturally if you had the owner's manual, it would tell you....

I seem to remember a bracket of relays, probably 3 relays total......they were either near the strut towers or on the frame where the radiator is located.....just a guess on my part....

My next question is, what is the problem?

The vehicle doesn't start, and you don't think the fuel pump is getting voltage?

As far as that relay goes, when you turn the key to "on", it is only "energized" for two seconds......when you crank the vehicle, then it is powered for as long as you crank.....another thing to remember.....there is usually an oil pressure switch that is wired in parallel with the relay....it is like a back up.....if the relay fails, there is no power to the pump......however, by cranking the vehicle, you build up oil pressure......this pressure will cause the oil pressure switch to close and send BAT voltage to the pump and will start the car.....but since it takes a few seconds for oil pressure to build up, the car won't start right away......it will be an EXTENDED crank of 4-5 seconds before the care will start....
