83 Automatics OK? (Rampage/Scamp!)

I'm going to look at a 83 Plymouth Scamp GT which unfortunately is an automatic and not the 5-spd.

How problematic were the automatics in 83?

PPS. Is a 5-spd conversion crazy talk?

The old Chrysler 3 speed automatics were fine, the 4 speed autos that they started with the minivans had many problems. The manual trannys were not that good, used to have an 1981 Dodge Omni with 4 speed and had various problems.
