Question Overheating engine

Maybe someone can help. My 3.1 engine is overheating per the gauge. Like around 230 or so... The scantool only shows 190 from the sensor. Basically, it appears half of my engine is running normal temp (sensor) and the back side where the temp sending unit is, is running extremely hot. My guess is that I don't have sufficient coolant flow to the rear of my engine. Anybody have a similar problem? If so, please shed your light unto me.

Thanks

Have you considered that the guage could be off? You have 2 coolant sensors on this engine one near the T-stat that sends the temp reading to the computer and one on the back on the block which sends temp readings to the guage. You could have a senor problem most likely but I have seen bad guages also.

It's not the gauge... there is a resistance check you set at the temp transmitter and set it... It should read appropriately and mine does.

Could be the heater core

It could be the heater core, grandams are notorious for this problem, mine has had it and many other ppl. who posted here have aswell. If it is the heater core it could cost newhere from 300 to 500 dollars CND.

Re: Overheating engine

my car was running hot on the driver side and cold on the passenger side also.............then my car was overheating and no heat...... then it was overheating with heat.... everyone suggested bleeding the system cause there was air in it......sure what ever..right ... but it`s true.... I tried bleeding the air out and then it would only over heat when driving slow and would cool down when accelerating.....so what i did was unhook both heater hoses and the big line from the resivor and had someone hold a gardenhose to the big hose from the resivor and run water into the system while i blocked the lower line from the water pump and then blocked the other for awhile..you would be amazed at the bubbling sound as all the air came out....while still running water throught the system, hook up the lower heater hose first and then rehook the upper hose and turn the water off..... It`s solved my problem and made me very happy.... who would think just a little bit of air in a system would cause so many people trouble.... ps... hope this helps you .... I work on my system for over a week with flushing and thermestat changing ,,it was driving me nuts... all over a little bit of stupid air..... happy trails
