How much do these engines cost?

Hey I'm new to AF.com. I need some help. I currently own a CRX DX with the slow D15 engine. I want to swap out that engine for a D16 SOHC VTEC engine and need to know how much I would have to pay for a used one with tranny. Also what else do I need for this swap? Would I have to buy a vtec controller to activate the vtec? I have $300 to spend right now.

you can get a d16z6 anywhere from like 400-900 bucks you dont need a vtec controller all you need is a obd0 to 0bd1 converter, and you will probably want to use your tranny so you do not have to do cable to hydraulic transmission conversion because those are pricey.

i would say that it would run around 600 for trans. and engine if you buy a d16z6, i wouldnt go with the d16y8 because it would cost more and would be a headace to install due to that version of obd, also as far as a v-tec controller goes, i would just pick up a 92-95 ex or Si ecu, that way it has the v-tec controller built in, so when v-tec kicks in you get the appropriate fuel curves and whatnot, but make sure if you get the ecu you also use the 92-95 ex/si distributer as well or you will have problems, but if you do decided to use a 88-91 ecu make sure u use the 88-91 distributer as well. any more questions? feel free to ask

just an idea

just an idea but if your new to the game and if i'm guessing right your looking for the cheepest way to get a vtec possible, well if your current 1.5 is in good enough shape you could just do a mimime conversion and just leave your engine in and change the head and fuel injection system. i can be done in your carport and takes a couple of days... plus if you find the right places you can do it for as little as $200 i've heard though my estimate has come to $300 to $350 and all you have to do is check local junk yards for the parts they are reasonable easy to find plus if you want more info check this sight out.

hope your remember to upgrade brakes, tires, and shocks so you get to keep your beloved car.

Ok so the same thing would apply for the DX engine? How much of a horsepower gain are we talking with the VTEC head on my D15 block then? Would I then be able to turbocharge that engine as I planned to do later on?

answer about head swap

yes you would be able to turbocharge the d15 w/ vtec head but you would need to get a custom turbocharger howerver thery aren't that much more expensive i had lightning motorsports quote me around $1.2k for a custom turbocharger of course you would need to upgrade your engine components to handle the added strain. but the vtec head swap could yeald you as much as 125hp since the bottom end blocks are basically the same but a much more reasonable assumption in my openion is around 115hp. although more experienced people feel free to help me out w/ this advise the reason i'm going to do a "mimime" conversion is i have a brand new 40k mile jdm engine and i don't really have the cash to buy a full new engine.

hope that helps good luck and feel free to ask more i'll answer what i can i'm not the experienced gearhead myself but have done a lot of research.

Before I go turbo for the VTEC head work I plan on using the following: Crane Camshaft, AEM cam gear, AEM pulleys, Skunk 2 Intake manifold, Performance throttle body, and then I'm not sure what else to use from there. What parts should I purchase to make my bottom stronger so that it could handle 10psi of boost. That is as high as I am going to go on the D15/16 engine. Also could I run an extremely small shot of nitrous through the engine with the turbo? I plan on buying a "sneeky-pete" nitrous system and shooting a 25 shot through the engine. After I have all this done I the plan on getting a Jet performance chip prepped for all of this. How much horsepower would my mini me swap be pushing with all of this?

shoot

shoot man i'm no turbo expert on turbo yet, but i'de say off an educated guess if you know how much a d16z6 would push after that knock off 10% but you might start a new thread the mimime swap is preitty well known around here as i was shocked to discover when i joined this forum.
