Got it without splitting open the transmission. With patience and luck, it could be done on the car but I was advised to check the clutch since I have over 180,000 miles on it. I did pull/drop the transmission and was I glad I did. The clutch, although it felt fine, was shot and ready to fail at any day. Luckily it had not damaged the pressure plate but it was about to do so.
