2000 windstar, charging light

I have changed alternators twice thinking it was bad, but each time after installing the alternators the battery light comes on about 30-40 seconds after starting the engine. The multimeter reads 14.57 volts consistently but the message light says check charging system.
Any help on this/

Re: 2000 windstar, charging light

Could be just a low battery maybe try charging it and see what happens... happened to my brother in his aerostar went to the states for vacation and when he pulled into walmart the charging light/battery light came on and when they checked it he was charging fine but his battery was really weak and after they changed the battery the light went off and he was on his way.... ****I AM NOT A MECHANIC (Just Giving My Opinion)****

how old is the battery? has it been load tested? have you bench tested the alt? I hate to mention this but if you replaced alternator #2 and the same battery was in it may not have been needed. Most auto parts places will do both of these tests for free. If battery and alt check out, make sure connections between them are clean and tight.

Re: 2000 windstar, charging light

Just checked the Haynes Manual and it says 14-15 volts is normal. so if the light is still on i guess that you might have to get it checked by a professional and see if they can figure it out but like i said it could possibly come down to the battery just being weak and old. you can get a load test done at most auto parts stores.... luckily for me i have all necessary tools to check everything here

Re: 2000 windstar, charging light

I don't know if your 2000 works the same as my '96, but normally the Charge Warning Indicator illuminates when the alternator pulls the "I" wire (light green/red) on the connector to ground. If that wire is shorted between the alternator and the instrument cluster, the light will be illuminated. Pull the connector and check the resistance of that wire to ground. You should measure a high resistance (>1000 ohms). If it is low (<50 ohms) there is a short (the wire is grounded) somewhere.
