Need a new driver side mirrow.

Does anybody know how to change a driver side mirror. The casing that the mirror sits in is broke. The mirror it self is ok but the case is broken.

Remove the access cover. Remove the three nuts holding the mirror on. Remove mirror assembly.

Do I need to remove the door panel ?

Never done one myself, however looking at the service manual, it would appear that it can all be done without removing the door panel.

I agree but I can't figure out how to change the wires because they are behind the door.
I tried to change the mirrow but can't figure out how to remove the access cover. Anybody know how?

Again, never done a Lucerne, but HAVE accessed GM mirrors before. The access cover should just pop off it you use a flat tool and just pry it off. If like other GMs, it is held on by two (maybe three) pop fasteners, and then three nuts to remove the mirror assembly..

the wires are connected down into the door,how do I disconnent them-can't get my hand down there

then I guess the door panel has to come off.

I think the connector is just 2" below the top edge......I think you can pry the upper right corner away without removing the whole panel...

No, your wrong. The door panel has to be removed in order to disconnect the wire connector for the power mirrors. If he pries on the upper part of the door panel, more than likely something is going to break. Most door panels "hang" over the window channel, or are bolted to the door frame. Either way, the door panel has to me removed.

If you can post a picture of your door panel, I can help you thru it. Also, give me the year, make and model. I have access to professional repair information and might be able to post exactly how to remove it.

Having removed numerous door panels, I assumed everyone would find it easy to do, without sepcific instruction. So here are the instruction right from the Lucerne Service Manual.

Handle Bezel Cover Removal

1. Remove Bezel Cover Screw
2. Remove bezel

Door Panel Removal

1. Use a J 38778 Door Trim Pad Clip remover.
2. After releasing all of the retainers along the outer perimeter of the door trim panel, hold the panel away from the door and lift up on the panel to disengage the 2 clips that anchor the armrest into the door sheet metal.
3. Disconnect the inside door handle linkage.
4. Disconnect electrical connections
5. Remove panel

I substitute a flat head screwdriver or some flat tool for J 38778.
There should be roughly 3 pop retainers on the front, 3 on the bottom, and 3 on the back, (most cars) None on the top, as the top sits down in a grove in the sheet metal. Put your chosen tool between the metal and plastic door panel and gently pry loose. Normally with a little pressure they pop out.

To reinstall, hook up the electrical connections, and door linkage. Rest the panel in the top grove in the door and push down. The 9 or so fasteners will line up with the holes in the sheet metal, just pop them into place with a rubber mallet (or in my case, my hand)

After you are finished, you will say...well that was easy. Good luck.

If that is correct then all you would have to so is, pry away the top right corner, and disconnect the harness.....I believe it is just below the top edge, which is exposed when you remove the trim that covers the 3 retaining nuts to the mirror.....

Yes I did have to take the door panel off. I was able to do it and change the mirror. Thank you everybody for your help.
