00 5.3 cam

Looking for a good towing cam for 5.3 . Truck has 175,000 and plan on only doing cam, intake, head gaskets, timing chain. It has no power from about 2000 to 4500 rpms when towing 24ft enclosed trailer. Would there be anything else to change at this time? It doesn't burn any oil and holds 50-55 lbs oil pressure @ idle. Don't think it needs anything done on bottom end. Not looking for a radical cam. Would I need to add a bigger torque converter?

how much weight are you towing ?

I would replace the cat converters.. could be plugged damaged.

also with power issues I would measure fuel pressures. clean MAF CRC MAF cleaner.. and the throttle body.

I tow 4000 lb 20 ft boat no power problems.

when I do tow I use 89 octane.. 87 is too low..tow only in 3rd gear ..if you do OD the tranny will overheat .

Re: 00 5.3 cam

I am towing 8000 to 10000 lbs. I drive in drive with tow button on. 93 octane. all other items are fine. Could the cats could drain that much power? On level road I can do 80 with no problem but soon as so as I hit a slight grade I become a highway speed bump.

towing that much you need more engine. now I understand why you lack power.

you should operate in 3rd gear and keep the speed down to 60 MPH.

what is going to happen is the transmission start to fail because of the high temps.

you have a huge tranny cooler ?
