backup lights

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas:

My backup lights are out...the bulbs are good, the fuse is fine, so this is not the issue.

Someone suggested the Neutral Safety Switch, but this seems to be working (since I can't start the car while it's in gear)...is it possible for one part of it to be broken and another part work?

Also, wiring was suggested, but I have no idea where to start looking on this.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: backup lights

Check the loom of wires inside the trunk by the driver's side trunk hinge. Open up that loom and look for freyed or broken wires. Fix any broken or freyed wires you may find.

Re: backup lights

Gen 1 Camrys have this problem with the neutral safety switch. Never experienced it with Gen 3, but I suppose it's possible. If the "R" doesn't light up on the dashboard, the white reverse lights at the back of the car won't light up either. Sometimes I could jiggle the gear shift to make the lights come on.

The car still moves in reverse when you want it to, and everything else works perfectly fine, including tail lights, brake lights, and blinkers

If this is your only issue, don't worry about it. Worst case scenario, it will fail inspection if the mechanic doing the inspection is a real stickler. Just take it to a mechanic you're friendly with and don't bother with it.
