Do you think this is a good buy?

Hey everyone, I'm just looking for your opinions. I'm ready to do an engine swap in my 92 Civic Hatch and was seriously considering the B16 and possibly the B18. However, I'm pretty tight on cash. A guy I met is looking to sell his D16 for $650. Its 1.6L SOHC VTECH. It also includes a new tranny, a new ACT Stage 2 Clutch, and a Greddy Turbo kit already installed and running 6lbs of boost. The engine has 85,000 miles on it. I'm thinking its a great deal and will leave me extra cash for additional mods. Any opinions?

first off it is VTEC. god damn noobies can never get it right. second off i wouldn't buy it because it is only SOHC not DOHC, and also the DOHC motors like the ones u stated are far more superior IMO, but then again there is that price issue. 650 for a motor that is already turbo........ i might be leaning more for the d16 then one of the b series motors u mentioned.

For $650 the guy might as well give it away for free. its not a bargain, its a steal. i seriously dont believe someone would give it all away for $650, or else the guy is just seriously wacked.

so sue me over the "H" I put in VTEC. So I don't always remember. It stands for "Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control" right? Thanks for the input though. The price tag on that deal is making it really hard to say no. A new Greddy alone runs $1500-$2000 doesn't it?

I haven't actually seen it yet. I'm planning on taking some of my mechanic friends to help me give it a good look over. The guy said he'd guarantee it to at least start fine. I suppose that's pretty much the same guarentee you get when you buy a JDM motor

well the 1500 for the greddy turbo kit is a fairly decent price. Although with civics u can olny boost about 7 psi without blowin yor motor. all hondas need to get new internals and have the motor sleeved in order to carry more boost. not many people have turbo on their civics. if u need to know anythin else, either ask me or ask in the N2O/Turbo/Superchargers forum they will help u with any other questions.

Theres no such thing as a deal . Bottom line. The only exception is from someone your friends with. But man *IF* thats in good condtion or even half assed condition its still worth every penny. Is this guy plain stupid? because most people who turbo their cars atleast know what they are kind of doing.

exactly, and his engine is probably all f'd up.. i would stay clear of this deal and either do a) get a non-vtec engine and get a turbo
or b) get a vtec like a b18c, depending on how much you want to spend - going all motor, which lasts longer, reliable, my personal choice.. *just be patient or you're asking to get ripped off

this is definitely a swap question for the N2O/Turbo/Superchargers forum which talks all about swaps

here are some websites to look at
fox's den
inlinefour
jdmhondaparts
jdmpower

That deal is too good to be true. D16's tend to blow after being on boost for a little while. There just not a performance engine. I've seen JDM B16's for $500-600 from importer websites. A lower mile B18B would also be decent if you planned to turbo it on down the road(assuming you dont care about an 8000+rpm redline and DOHC VTEC).
On the B18B, you could get Eagle forged rods/Weisco low C/R forged pistons for roughly $800. Sleeve the block, pick up a 500+CFM turbocharger, intercooler, ect. and you would be a highway killer(street killer if you could hook up.

the only possibility that i can conjure up that this guy would be willing to GIVE you this engine with the turbo setup is if he stole it...because if he bought it, and it is in good condition.... then I'm certain that he would be very aware that he could get much more money out of it. So one of two things happened here...the engine is stolen... or really f*ed up. Just be very very careful.
