front crankshaft oil seal

I am in the process of replacing the front seal on my 1997 3.0 Plymouth Voyager. I have it almost torn down, I am using the Auto Zone repair guides to kind of steer me in the right direction. The repair guide states to remove basically everything on the front of the engine, after removing the front sprocket it states to remove the five bolts holding the oil pump and remove the oil pump and the seal is on the front of the oil pump. No where does it say to remove the oil pan? When reading to replace the oil pump it says to remove the pan. Bit confusing, do I need to remove the oil pan?
