alarming news from 'the land of the free'

Apparently,people can 'disappear',just like Saddam's regime.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/2998366.stm

When respected organisations like the Red Cross start voicing concerns,it's time to listen.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/nation..._terror17.html

So tell me,are the two paragraphs below obsolete?

Amendment V

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Amendment VI

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

is Guantanmo Bay considered part of the US

If what you say is correct US citizens can take the Judge's ruling to the Supreme court and they will do whatever is necessary

But secret arrests ?

hmmmm sounds a bit mad although if you were arrested for terrorism would you want anyone knowing about it? Even if you were innocent and not charged wouldn't it be better for people not to know?

I dunno its a bit odd

I'm satisfied with the courts ruling.

Quote:
But the appeals court backed the US Justice Department who said such information would play into the hands of terrorist groups.
I am also happy with the civil liberties groups bringing the subject up and before a court. Both sides presented their evidence and the court ruled accordingly.

Quote:
More than 20 civil liberties groups had argued that their names should be disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act.
If either side doesn't like the ruling, they can appeal to the next higher court. I'm sure that will be the next step.

On a somewhat seperate angle. Screw the mother fuckers in this country illegally. They should be detained and shipped right the fuck back out unless they've broken other laws besides the immigration one. Their are lots of people who want to be here legally who can't be because cock sucking fuckwad illegals clog up the INS.

Whew - now I hope that scares a few of those assholes out so my brother-in-laws other half of the family can have their families get their visa requests looked at and can get here soon.

All overseas military bases are considered to be American territory.Theprevailing laws of the United States apply, and are enforced by American military police. So yes,in answer to your question,Guantanamo Bay is considered to be part of the United States and all of the prisoners of war[note the term, the term 'detainees' is nothing more than an excuse to sidestep the Geneva Convention] who are being illegally held there should have the same rights as any citizen detained on the U.S.mainland.

On a seperate angle.....good to see that you are not completely xenophobic,Yogs.

I'm among the least xenophobic people - my wife and her family are immigrants. Moved here from Korea about twenty years ago. My brother-in-law (my wife’s brother) wife is from China. My brother-in-law (my sister’s husband) is from Canada – and French Canadian to boot. You’ve never once heard me say that we shouldn’t let people in here. I just bark that they should follow the rules and that the rules have to be simplified.

How much do you want them simplified though?

I understand your dilemma, it's no secret I am not exactly American, but I don't think it is the rules that are the problem, I think it is the complete lack of control over the Southern US borders that is the problem.

You forget Yogs, it only takes a few bad people to ruin it for everyone, which is what you're experiencing.

Two things. Believe me, I know that a few bad apples make life rough for everyone else. The simplification comes from fixing how the INS runs. Its like any other government organization, there is to much damn paperwork, insufficient manpower, and politicians sucking up to the local ethnic minority to enforce the existing rules.

The border is a sieve. Every politician is scared to insult the largest minority group in the US by suggesting that they have to abide by the rules too.

I am with you on the 'how the INS runs' situation, I was fortunate to have been able to hire some help otherwise I would still be milling about in the lobby with all the Mexicans at the INS building in Philadelphia.

Go figure how you can be a minority group when you hold a significant percentage of the population pie-chart......

I wish people would stop hiding behind skin color......
