2001 GTP Trac Control / ABS Light

I have changed both of the front wheel hubs and I am not sure how to clear the Trac Control / ABS Light. Do I just reset it like I would any other codes or is there something else I need to do or does it just reset itself after some time? Thanks!

To reset this light you will need an abs capable scanner. Make sure that you also don't have a bad rear wheel bearing as it will cause the light to come on too. An ABS capable scanner will tell you if there is an issue.

Thanks GTP Dad. I'm guessing this would only be available from the dealer?

Actually autozone will scan it for free but they will not reset the light, at least in PA. I had my Cadillac there on Friday just because it was convenient and the light had just come on. They stated they were not an authorized repair shop and could not reset the computer. You may need to go to a repair shop to have it scanned and reset. Good Luck!

If the light is still on you still have a problem. The light will go off once the issue is fixed.

You do need to scan it though to see where the issue lies. It could very well just be a broken wire.

Re: 2001 GTP Trac Control / ABS Light

Would a cracked wire literally make my traction control and abs not work or is it simply lighting those up as an indicator that something is wrong such as a bad hub or a cracked wire?

It could also be a build up of metallic residue from break dust on ABS sensors it can cause that fault too make Shure they are cleaned off

Re: 2001 GTP Trac Control / ABS Light

Brake dust will not cause the problem......a bad sensor or wire harness will.....also water intrusion......

Any time an ABS code is set, traction control is disabled....

Why were the front wheel hubs replaced? Was it based on codes from both front circuits? The code itself, cannot determine if a sensor or harness is at fault....all the code states, is there is a problem in the circuit.....

Re: 2001 GTP Trac Control / ABS Light

If the ABS system detects a fault, it will disable the ABS system, and as an off shot, disable any component that uses the ABS module....such as your Traction Control.

ABS systems are what we call "self-clearing", meaning that, when the fault is corrected; I.E, a wheel speed sensor, or a low brake fluid level, when the car is turned off then back on, the ABS does a quick systems check. If everything is ok, it then proceeds to "ok" status, and will self clear any codes and clear any ABS or Trac-Off light.

So, you still have a problem with either your ABS or Traction system.

Get it checked, because as of right now, you've got no ABS, and that's a real bitch when you got snow and ice on the roads this time of year.

excuse me Teck ll you really need to check your text book skills , a drone magnetic field will definitely affect the abs system , that is how the sensor reads the ring on the hub,

I have never once seen an ABS system affected by brake dust.

Re: 2001 GTP Trac Control / ABS Light

That's because you just replace them ..look up common causes of abs sensor failure, I have found many, That is the real case in most abs sensors mounted in rear ends they get metal filings built up on them, Same thing with metal impregnated break pads, The dust residue creates a magnetic field that is enough to change the resistance setting off an abs fault

I've never had to replace an ABS sensor. Only done wiring repair to fix issues.

Re: 2001 GTP Trac Control / ABS Light

I have never seen brake dust be the problem.......I have seen damaged interruptor rings, but that is very rare....

Majority of the time, it is the sensor.....sometimes the harness....sometimes water intrusion.....

If the sensor has been replaced with a cheap aftermarket hub assembly, they can easily fail within a year......

I have seen cars come in with hub caps and wheels spokes covered with unbelievable amounts of break dust, having no effect on the ABS system....

Just because I haven't seen it happen, doesn't mean it can't.....metal shavings on the sensor in a rear end, could be a possibility....but we are talking about a Grand Prix, not a vehicle with a rear end....
