keep looking man i just got one of these cars like two weeks ago, try looking at the engine from the front on the left side these is a black cap with a hex nut on it just at the side of the intake runners i think thats it. i work at a gas station with one of those programs called mitchell 1 it like the all data system but apperantly better, anyway i couldn't find anything on the filter location but i would put money on that spot i told you about,
i talked to some parts guys and they say that volvo's are like this too so they weren't surprised if you still have trouble i will try to post a picture of the spot i am thinking of

On our 04 Sunfire...

From the front of the car on the drivers side locate the power steering res. Look down and to the left for a large black plastic cap with a nut on it. I used a 1.25" socket to remove. Pull old filter off cap push new filter onto cap and put a little lube on the o-ring on the end of the filter and thread it back in. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN!

What year is the sunfire? if its a 98-02 it should be under the engine on the backside. It is really hard to see. you have to reach under the engine block and there are a few wires and bars in the way.
