here's the second cosworth i've seen this month for sale. hope it goes to a good home.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2419709561 appears to be a 94 or earlier with the larger T35 garrett turbo; more tune-able than the later 95 with the T25. salvage, shmalvage. so long as its been repaired correctly. my guess is that it will sell for about $25K. for the same price as a WRX, you can be driving something alot more unique. not to mention quicker! |

Hello I have a 85 XR4ti. How much do they differ from each other. Im think of importing one from Germany. Any info would be great. Like getting parts. Motor type? Drive train? Is the car worth all the hassel?

the platform of the cossie and the xr4ti are similar, more so than the cossie is to a normal euro escort of that vintage. but the engine and drivetrain are all unique. parts are easy; graham goode in the UK has everything you need with an extensive on-line catalog.
as with any non-US spec car, i'd highly recommend you coordinate through a legit import company who has experience with DOT/EPA and customs rules and procedures. that is, if you want to actually register and drive it on the street. or find one 4 sale here that's had all the work done. even though they're still expensive, considering the time and money it takes to go find one, ship it, federalize it and register it, might cost you about the same. there's one in san francisco i know is for sale. |

How similar are the cossie and XR? Can I swap parts to the XR? How about all-wheel drive conversion? As for getting on here is no problem. The problem is picking a car to import here. Ive owned the XR for 10 years and the 3 owner. I know the other 2, who are friends. I ended up giving the car to my brother 3 years ago, due to parts and I have another car. He did mods and before he could finish he moved. Now the cars back in my hands. Now with a shop, I can do the car right. But I saw a 94 RS in the Sports Compact Car Mag. The engine bay look very close to the XR. I know stock HP on the XR is 175 and can be bumped up to around 400hp with the stock bottom end. Whats the stock hp on the RS? Any info is great.

the cosworth drivetrain, i understand, are very compatible with the XR4ti. the escort RS cosworth engines sit North/South like in the XR4's and alot of the structure (strut towers for example) i believe are the same. if you're just looking for the running gear, it may be easier to find a Sierra Cosworth that came before the escorts which run the same YBT engines. but that way you don't have to fuss with the shorter wheelbase in the escorts when transplanting into a XR4. i believe they made a 4wd version as well (cosworth sapphire).
check out www.drakenent.com. he's a guy up in vancouver that does lots of cosworth related work on merkurs and also puts XR4 running gear into Escort RS shells and sells them as street cars (canada only, i understand). out of the box, the escort cosworths made 227 bHP. the same figure is quoted for both the earlier models with the large garret T35 turbo and the 95's that came with the smaller garret T25 unit. the 35 is more tuner friendly, as the ignition setup is a much simpler design. injection, fuel pump and chip modifications alone have been known to bump power up to 400. seems like the limit is only your wallet and time. good luck! |
